Whatever it is, it doesn't look that cheap!

Have you taken the spool off? There may be manufacturers markings inside. Looks a reasonable quality reel as there are a good number of line lays and the ratchet button is metal.

Re: What reel is this please?
Someone has had serious thoughts about putting lays nearest to the spool rim - so perhaps an adaption of a reel? Definitely for trotting. Someone capable with a drill & lathe?
I am assuming it is metal not a plastic type material.

It's all metal. It doesn't look adapted. It has bearings.

Not one I've seen before. It certainly is a shallow spool! A touch of the Lewtham style about it in stem, foot, bearings etc?

Two reel makers come to mind, one is Auger, the other is Dam.
Just a guess of course.

Isn’t that spring and pawl design reminiscent of both Dowling and S.E. Cooke?

Re: What reel is this please?
I have what appears to be an identical reel that I picked very cheaply at an auction. It has bearings and is very smooth, but the retaining nut has a tendancy to become loose.
I think it is what is called a Leeds reel.
