could anyone give a clue as to the maker please. it is aluminium, brass and wood and should look quite good when sorted.
It doesn't have a Slater latch or any readily noticeable markings.
I am working through its problems but I will leave that to another post.

No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it's not the same river and he's not the same man.

Anyone got an idea as to the age, Smith & Wall history is a bit sparse although it does seem they were close Ruben Heaton.

Amazing detective work on this one chaps. I must admit, took one look and thought "Billy The Drill" has been at it again.
It just shows how some see an improvement to a reel and others question why.
Wal.

Re: Reel ID Required
Smith & Wall both worked for Reuben Heaton and set up on their own no sure of the date but I would think in the 1880's as their first patent was September 1886. They were a family of reel makers and Arthur Humphrey Wall married Betsy Anne Smith. Arthur Wall then moved to Hardy Brothers in about 1901/1902, like so many other Birmingham reel makers. S&W continued to make reels but I do not know when they stopped.
