Reel for bucket fishing

Post by Cane »

I found this photo of the young Cane taking his first casting lesson, into a bucket. The bucket was gradually placed further and further away as I improved. Enough, anyway to persuade my grandfather that I was ready to go fishing with him. I wondered if anyone could identify the reel? It looks to be a cheap alloy job, but a makers name would be great. I’d like to pair it up with the rod( which I still have), for a days fishing. Not sure I could cast into a bucket these days though.

I think it might be a reel called a Tokoz... I had one many years ago... made of a very thin metal

Thanks Harry. I’ll look into that suggestion.

This was the sort of reel... sadly I let it go in a club tackle auction a couple of years ago

This brings back memories of the old bloke who taught me fly fishing, he would throw bicycle tires across his lawn, and then I had to try and get the fly in the one he chose. It was a good way to learn, as there were no sharp hooks involved. I used the same method to teach my boy how to cast a ledger weight.

If the ventilation holes were more triangular than pear-shaped, it might have been a "Triple Check".

Tokoz were made in Czechoslovakia and mostly serviced the budget end of the centrepin market; made some fixed spools too. They were very popular with UK anglers on a budget/young anglers in the 1950s and early 1960s but some models were made all the way from the 1950s through the 1970s: as was the way in less consumerist Eastern Europe designs remained the same for a much longer time than in the West making tem a bit harder to date.

Thanks BB. I’ve had a close look at this one and I’m not sure it is a Tokoz as the one in my photo seems to have a black back to it, but the front of the reel looks to be plain aluminium wither either pear or triangular shaped holes.
