Look up Roddy / Roddymatic reels and you'll see what I mean.

Nice looking reel Dave and great condition. It looks like one of the Columbian reels too.
Not sure who actually made them but they do seem to have had a good following.

Re: Anon Shaw 999 Reel
Definitely one of the reels sold under the Columbian brand and not a Roddy although they did do not dissimilar models. Columbian were made by Olympic and were right at the tip of the 1960s Japanese fishing reel spearhead. Columbian offered a lot of bang for buck back in the 60s and I think you will find a worm drive in there if you open it up. Also seen same model badged with such names as Virginia and Tum Water.

PS. Your £15 is on the lower end of what it could fetch with that box and paperwork so a reasonable buy.

Re: Anon Shaw 999 Reel
Hi,
I stand corrected and concur with my esteemed colleagues. Somewhere I have a small Columbian 61 (if I remember correctly) that has a worm gear, but a large one - 68 that doesn't. The 61 is actually a nice (very) little reel, although I'm not sure what I'd use it for.

Did you buy it and if so, have you used it? The proof is in the pudding and it could turn out to be a good little user regardless of if it is well known or not. I bought a reel at a boot fair called an Alcedo and had never heard of it, it turned out to be lovely and smooth in use. It sounded like it was made for an online grocery shopping delivery service

Re: Anon Shaw 999 Reel
Yes, that is correct. They were an importer of tackle, most from Japan but also other countries as well. Similar to Gilfin in fact. In addition to out and out importers, some established UK tackle manufacturers also used foreign reels etc to supplement their home grown range.
