Well I found that the dettol wasn't working on the Speedia, so resorted to emery cloth and wire wool... The corrosion is terrible with deep holes in the ally and blackened metal all over ...

It spins well albeit with a bit of an unbalanced feel and the drag adjuster is broken... I don't have to tools to re rivett it if I pulled it apart, so I'll clean, oil and tidy it up with a coat of black paint or two and see how it looks...

On a nothing to loose project what about caustic soda. I use the crystals and BOILING water to clean off dinky toy cars back to an alloy casting. Its dangerous stuff but after a five minute immersion and rinse off, the toys are cleaned to be resprayed. Lots of info and clips on UTube.....Tony

Bit late now.... I used emery paper and wire wool... fingers are red raw... the corrosion was hideous especially on the back plate

I think it'll be painted black and become a user ... it spins well enough, but the drag adjuster is broken and the end float screw is seized solid...

The real answer to the reel corrosion is to have it totally stripped down and have it fine bead blasted on a low psi ,the only people that do that are paint specialist or Instrument makers, or if you start off with a 400 wet and dry paper then finely finish with 600 wet and dry you might find it a long task.Reelmaker.

I'd either buy some painter stripper or some acetone, if it's still possible to buy the latter. Cellulose thinners may also work.
