Refurbished a Allcocks match aerial reel

Post by Evert van der Plas »

Here we have a Allcocks reel that need some repairs and a new layer paint.

The reel did look in a bad condition and holes were drilled in for a line guard that had to be filled with metal epoxy, a gray layer on the metal was the cause that the paint did not adhere and also had to be removed before a new paint to be applied.
This time i I chose a different color just becourse i like it this way :-)
After the paint and grey layer was removed i gave it two layers acrylic paint on the spool and back plate, the back plate stays black satin and wil have a new decal when finished. i mask the parts that i don't want the paint on with Vaseline and always works great for me.

The reel does looks nice and can be used again, the reel spins fine and is saved from the bin

My word Evert, you are continually surpassing anything I think is possible - that is out of this world Sir.

Lovely job. I rather like the green and black combination. I’m also a polished rim chap! Enjoy.

That looks superb.

This looks very nice. Could you explain in a little more detail how you mask with vaseline, and achieve such
a clean separation between painted and unpainted areas, as on the rim and the rivet heads?

Thanks Gents
The masking with Vaseline i do with a small pointed brush and works the best for me. it must be applied precisely for the best result. when the paint is dry you can easily clean marked parts with a piece of kitchen paper and a flat wooden stick (chopsticks are perfect)

The Vaseline must be cleaned when you touches parts that must be painted with a bit off withe spirit on a clean brush. Image
i mask every part that will give more details on the reel when done

good luck gents
