Wal.
Sand the spare side plate to get a fine dust to mix into clear epoxy. It will still show as a patch, but will not jump out from the rest of the side plate.

Take your time, it does not have to be done in one sitting. If you run into a problem put it away and think about it for awhile.

I have a another reel that I started over three years ago and still am not sure how I want to proceed to finish it.
