Bob "The Captain" Southwell Challenge.
It is interesting that Capt. Bob does not even have his own category in Traditional Cane Rods.
There has been a lot spoken about Bob and his wares over the years so let us once and for all collate the known information and put it together in Traditional Cane Rods so we can all access the information and have a much better understanding about these very sought after rods which will possibly give us all a clearer picture to identification.
Please facts only. I will start you all off with fact No. 1 :-
1. J.W. Southwell Fishing Tackle Specialist 30 Station Road Tel. Croydon 4610
2. Ted could not find another address.
3. Keith does not have any tackle from the esteemed maker.
4. Trevor states Bob produced many unmarked rods.

If you have no grease with you, and your rings are full of ice, do not cut out the ice with a pen-knife but get your man to put the rings one by one in his mouth, and so to thaw the ice.

Fact number two, despite my best efforts via Google, I cannot find another address for Mr Southwell!

Fact number three, I do NOT have any rods or any other items originating from the eminent Tackle Specialist.

Fact number four, allegedly he made thousands of rods! Many without his name on! This adds to the fun of speculation, not that it matters.

We need more experts.

I would disagree that it does not matter Trevor! So much speculative comment has been made about Southwell rods, I think it is long overdue that we have a dedicated section to dispel much of the misinformation!

In the scheme of the current climate Ted!!? And unless one is selling or buying one of these rods then the information is interesting, but that's all. Otherwise speculating is pretty harmless given the lack of information!

I agree Trevor, in the current climate I think that some threads have become a little 'heated'! To my shame I have been drawn into making comments that I should not have made, I have learned from it and it will not happen again! I think that the pressure of the times that we are all living through does not help, but I also think that Mark can be relied on to mediate sensibly if required. With regard to the 'Southwell' saga, I do think that he merits a dedicated thread even though I am never likely to own one of his rods! Over the years I have certainly seen a few that were definite 'ringers' which is why I fetl that a dedicated section would educate us all!

Cheers Ted! Yes, certainly this thread is valid for its educational use. And it's best to keep things calm so we can all focus more clearly on the useful information with regards to the Southwell pedigree.
