The Abbey deLuxe - Match rod

Post by Marc »

At long last I've managed to get around to redoing a rod I did a while back which I was never happy about. The Abbey rod is a whole cane spliced into built cane in the middle and tip sections, originally painted all black with yellow whippings.

I used U-40 colour lock and it hasn't been totally successful, which I'm a bit miffed about, but it's still a nice finish. Varnished in thinned black friars yacht varnish. Straight as a needle and back to the original ring spacing, after I added an extra the last time i did this rod, other than the few bits of bleed into the larger rings I'm very pleased with it; nowhere near the quality of some on here, but I'd say not a bad effort and it's proved a bit of a learner for when I redo the Allcocks Holdwell. Add more colour lock.

My new float rod, thanks for looking.

Thanks gents.

Had line through her today, I have to say, and I'm not a small man, it's a bit of a beast. Heavy and at 12ft did feel a little unwieldy. I always thought with the built cane sections being much finer than the adjoining whole cane that it would not bend well, but whomever put it together seems to have got it right; the rod bends progressively through to the butt section.

Can't wait to have something on the other end.

Splendid Marc, Sir. Nicely done. :Hat:

I will be using my Abbey match rod presented to me as a Christmas present by Bumble on the Beult come July, matched with my NHS reel by Leszek, what is the history of Abbey rods?
