Modern Youngs reel Purist Lightweight BJ etc.
So I have a bit of an itch to get a modern Youngs reel.
I lived in Redditch as a boy during the 80s and fished a little pond in the woods near Oakenshaw where I caught my first and still most favourite species a Perch (was about 4 ounces and spiked my hand!) I also fished the Arrow when I went to my grandparents who lived in Studley.
As I'm sure everyone did I enjoyed watching Go Fishing on TV especially when John Wilson was trotting. Since then I've always yearned for a reel like his 'off of the telly.'
I haven't lived in Redditch for some time and I realise that JW Youngs current production has little if anything to do with Redditch but in my mind I can still make the link to my childhood aspirations. I also realise that there are more traditional bonafide Redditch reels that would look great on a cane rod but I'm planning to use this one on a'hem more modern rods.
My question is what are the discernable differences between the different models. I want one almost exclusively for trotting fishing for silvers but also capable of spooling 6lb and targeting barbel and big chub on the float.

I wouldn't look further than the currently offered 'Super Lightweight' https://www.davistackle.co.uk/home?page ... gory_id=22

Another less expensive place to check might be Mullocks Auctioneers (see prices below as sold in June) or Angling Auctions (http://www.angling-auctions.co.uk).

The John Wilson reel is my favourite trotting reel out of all the modern J.W.Youngs reels.

Actually when John fished trotting on early TV I'm pretty sure he was fishing with an Allcock Match Aerial he had made a line guard for..the dimensions for it were in one of his books. The 'Heritage' reel was a modern simulation of that reel, I believe. ???

Yes I think you're right Nobby, I have a video somewhere of that. I'll dig it out and watch it later.

Absolutely spot on! The reason I suggested the Super Lightweight is that you get a 1” spool at 4.5” diameter (the Wilson is .75”) probably better if spooling up with 6lb line for barbel.

Thanks for the replies so far. Still undecided as yet but I've just had an unexpected pay rise at work this week so I may be booking at a day at Mill Tackle to build my own pin. While speaking with Gary about booking it up he said his choice for trotting with lighter lines would be the Purist CL then the Heritage, and good allrounders being the BJ and Purist II if wishing to use heavier lines.

I’m assuming the hammer price would be then plus commission on top; something to think about.Rod and Annette wrote: ↑Fri Sep 04, 2020 10:14 amWow, there were some bargains at the Mullocks auction, could have picked up a couple!Dokterhoo wrote: ↑Wed Sep 02, 2020 10:38 pm Another less expensive place to check might be Mullocks Auctioneers (see prices below as sold in June) or Angling Auctions (http://www.angling-auctions.co.uk).

I’d just be conscious of and keep an eye on weight if you’re planning to trot and hold the rod all day.

Re: Modern Youngs reel Purist Lightweight BJ etc.
I have a Purist II that I use for carp fishing. I like the reel – it's a solid piece of tackle, well made and with a solid spool to lay the line on rather than posts which I feel (rightly or wrongly) adds to the durability of the reel for carp fishing. However, due to the weight it wouldn't be my choice for trotting or for silver fish on a modern rod. For that I'd go for the 4" Super lightweight. I had and sold one of these as I felt it was too delicate for carp fishing. The benefit of this lighter reel, to me, is the rim mounted check lever that I would want on a trotting reel.
