The spokes had a thread on the hub end, but a point on the other, which sat in that groove. The arbour looks kosher to me. Pics tomorrow if I can figure out how to load them.

Sorry, I failed to work out how to upload a pic.
I know one shouldn't, but I really do wish exploding haemorrhoids upon those who turned botophucket and tinypics into ransomeware. Followed by walking the plank into a pond full of hungry leeches. Rinse and repeat forever.

Oops, just checked, mine's a 4" reel and the spokes are about 1.25" long.
