What, and how old....

This reel belongs to a guy I’ve known for over 50 years, it belonged to his grandfather, and in the fullness of time it will belong to his grandson - one of our forum members was kind enough to send me some screws to replace the damaged one in the pictures, and I would like to thank him again without embarrassing him......

Our problem now is what is it, how old is it? Are there likely to be any identification marks or numbers, and if so, where?

The drum is about 3.75” in diameter - my feeling is that it could be mid 1930s, certainly pre WW2.

I’d be most grateful for your views.

Kind Regards
Phil

Looks like a model C815 allcocks ariel to me, I think they were made during the 1960s great little workhorse reels top draw back in the day.

With its chrome foot that is quite a late one, but I can see how you thought it older as the spool design goes back to the earliest Aerial reel, invented by JW Youing when he was still an Allcock employee.

A little info here:

And you might enjoy Stefan Duma's article about JW Young too....anyone got a link?
