Dating an Allcock Easicast reel

Post by Leon Hoogendijk »

Hi Guys,

Can anyone help me dating this 3" Allcock Easicast reel? I guess it's an early model from the 1940s, but I could be wrong?

Thanks in advance.

Leon

Looking at this 1936 patent here:

The drawings seem the same. Whereas Walter Coton's 1931 patent is different...not a definite date, but a start.

They first get a mention in the 1933 catalogue and if memories serves there was a Easicast,Easicast 2 & 3. The 3rd version definitely had chrome plated line guide/brake also not sure they were still available post war? I use to have one with patent pending on it and it was a blackened finish rather than painted.
Everything apart from the catalogue information is from a dodgy memory :Hat:

There is an obviously later version which has a simple rotating pear-shaped lever on the backplate instead of the rim-mounted screw and sliding indicator of the 1936 patent.

Does anyone have the instruction leaflet that came with either?

I missed out on one of these at auction last year. I had a maximum limit that I was going to stick to and missed out by a £-still kick myself whenever I see one.
Sorry, cant help with dating but a lovely reel you have there.

The original Easicast reel from the mid 1930's had a screw spool release. They are a very underrated reel. They sell for very little considering the mechanics. I couldn't get £30 each for a 1, 2 and 3 at Redditch a couple of years ago.

Hate to keep plugging my new book - but, guess what, I have included in it a chapter on the Easicast reel. I am hoping it will assist in identifying and dating the various models, it also examines its various stages of production.
