Welcome to the TFF, RhodyFlyfisher!

You'll have all your questions answered in no time!

Check the rods for their elasticity. Cane can go soft over the years. When you bend the rod and it doesn't go straight afterwards, I wouldn't use it.
Also check the blanks for any signs of delamination. If you find any open glue lines, the rod needs to be repaired before you use it.

Welcome, it sounds like you have inherited a fine selection of rods to be used, admired and enjoyed.

Hi,

Welcome to the forum :-)

Check all the rod rings for rust, use a magnifying glass to check any agate rings for cracks. If there's any rust or cracks they will have to be replaced or you will trash an expensive fly line.

I guess I have been lucky, but all of the cane fly rods I have amassed over the past couple of years seem fine, and cast well enough without any particular attention.

You need to slow your cast right down to achieve a slower open loop to match the action of a much softer rod. Also don't try with heavy nymphs initially just stick with dries.
The best advice though is to use old silk lines, If you get a good one (Pull it hard to check it is not rotten before fishing for the first time!). They are so soft and supple and are far thinner than the corresponding weight of pvc. Loads of info on here about how to re vitalise them or try http://www.overmywaders.com/index.php?cleaningsilk

Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing - absolutely nothing - half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats.
