Back chasing roach.

Post by TrentFisher »

The afternoon saw me heading to the Trent.
My small creel contained the bits and bobs ,bait ,reel etc for my next adventure in what has become a favourite glide on my local stretch.
I have know this particular swim for many seasons.
Not the easiest to access but once you are installed ,waders required and limited tackle you can fish virtually undetected.
This is mainly due to the steep bank which at the base has no real flat space. That is why you need to stand and to trot this glide.
Tackle wise today I chose a 12ft Asipndale Avon,No.2 Ambidex. The float was a slim bodied cork/quill avon type.
The bait was wheat again. It is really working for me this season.
I look down this glide towards the broken willow, who's branches reach out over the river.
This is some fifty yards from my casting position .
It makes a nice vantage point for natures angler the kingfisher.
Correct depth established and the trickle of bait begins.
When starting ,I feed some bait upstream and some in front of my position. This continues until the first bite registers.
The first fish,a dace comes after about half an hour ,soon followed by quite a succession of these plucky scrappers.
The afternoon remains overcast ,then a burst of rain.
The first roach has arrived,a fin perfect beauty of around eight ounces.
Some more follow, they have moved up stream and the bites are coming in the first half of the glide.
I suspect this is the result of the duel feeding pattern.
Following the next burst of rain, there is a slight lull in the bites.
I keep the grains trickling in and the roach return once more.
Fish of a slightly better stamp, which see's me bringing the net into action.
Soon thinking of calling it a day the sky has darkened .
The orange tip of the float dips and sinks out of view.
The strike is met with some resistance .
The cane tip takes on a curve and absorbs the the fight taking place.
My mind knows this is a fight of a roach......
The hook holds as this olive green and silver beauty is safely netted.
The roach is over the pound mark.
My catch is admired and returned.
Shortly afterwards the heavens open and it is really time to go.
My tackle is now drying out so to ready for the next adventure.

All the best

Many thanks Gents,
it certainly was a very enjoyable session.
Please to report the tackle is all now dry and ready again.
One thing that crossed my mind during the session was I may need the help of an extra foot of rod.
So as I was tidying away the tackle this evening I pulled out a Edgar Sealey Featherweight 13ft glass rod.
The handle is not to long.
So I matched up the No.2 Amdidex to roughly the same position as when it is on the Aspindale I used on Sunday and bingo it makes a very nicely balanced outfit.
The rod is now in the holdall along with a two piece landing net handle fashioned from a old DAM glass rod with cork handle still in place, but slightly shortened.
Just need to get the flask out to prep a couple pints of wheat.
Roll on the weekend!

All the best
Nige.
