It's been awhile since my last outing......late October!
Today was a spur of the moment kind of session.
Just the basics put together for around three hours perch fishing until the light fades.
I found a spot down the steep bank and was soon settled in.
Orange topped float bobbing in the calm water behind the branches of the willow stretching out over the river.
The float would occasionally be picked up by the slight change in flow of the current and drift round the eddy.
It was left to move ,experience reminds me of the number of perch I have been fortunate to grace my net by letting this happen.
Anticipation builds right up to the final drift of the float.
Not this time.
New cast made with renewed hope.
More chopped worm and prawn introduced.
Wow the blue flash of the Kingfisher made a jewel against the grey afternoon.
Back to float watching.
The time flew by as fast as the flash of the Kingfisher.
I guessed at less than fifteen minutes of light left in the day.
My float had started on anther drift it moved towards the willow and then turned again and move away .
Travelling slowly ,then pausing before travelling again.
Hypnotic.
The orange tip had just passed by me again.
No warning,no slight dip.
Just gone....under!
Strike you fool was the voice in my head.
Joy and anguish all in the space of a split second.
The joy-the feel of resistance
The anguish-as the rod tip thumped and sprang straight.
The insult to injury-the mothers of all tangles as the float and end tackle took on the form of writhing eel and leaving a fine mess round the rod tip.
The light nearly gone,no chance of a final cast .
That's how it ended.
Am I frustrated?
Not all winter fishing on the Trent can be a lot like this.
You just smile and look forward to being there for another chance
I hope if you are lucky enough to be out in the coming week you stay connected to your prize.
All the best
Nige.
Just one chance.

Well done! I really enjoyed this account of your trip, your description of the wait, the bite, then the loss was superb!

Sounds like the day I've had but you did get the bonus of the kingfisher, there's always next time.
There are three things that improve with age: wine, friendship and water sense, and there's no short cut.
