It is all a bit sad as Nigel obviously had the best of intentions but has managed to cause upset to the powers that be. A simple case of his poking his nose in where it was not wanted. This is a shame as I believe he is a good and decent bloke who loves both angling and rural England.

My own view is that whilst Redmire is at the top of the list as regards the history of carp fishing in England it is now but a sad reflection of its past glory. Somewhat akin to one of our Stately Homes, Still lovely to look at and visit but not what it once was.
The coiled line travels from the reel, it brings up at last, the hook goes home, and then begins the test of skill. "BB"

I have followed this a bit. I've been around fishing now for 40+ years, read all the books and magazines, so I know a fair bit about Redmire.

This is a very interesting thread and there are heartfelt emotions in its pages. Redmire, like many rivers and lakes, is suffering due to the way our land is being managed and that has been described by the experts. The situation with Nigel Hudson, Mark Walsingham and the estate owners is all rather unfortunate because, if you put the commercial aspect to one side for just a moment, everyone involved would want the best for that little lake and the valley it rests in.

There has been some real upset over all this. I just wonder whether we gentlemen might agree to close this thread down now and, not to remove it, but let its content slip into the annals of history. Perhaps in doing so we might find a way to find some positivity and send out a message to all the parties that the TFF is here to support a better Redmire in any way it might. Similarly to show that, whilst in different ways, we all respect what would have been good intentions all round which regrettably ended in the upset. And ensure that Nigel, Mark and any others remain in our fold as dear friends, even where we haven't actually met them. That, in my opinion, is what TFF is about.

It's very frustrating when a thread is closed, everyone has been civil. The forum has enabled the publication of the facts. As work progresses this would be an ideal thread to keep everyone informed about the lake.

It was just a thought; its a matter for 'the management', of course. There just seems to have been a fair bit of upset.

Perhaps there could be a new thread that captures any work on the lake that follows but happy to defer.

Being away for a few days with limited wifi, I missed the spat and why two sides singing from the same sheet have caused upset. No matter. it's happened so let's go forwards and focus on the main issue.

I'm not that worried for Redmire, let's face it, it's been 'written off' several times before but seems to bounce back due to it's place in carp history. This may be it's biggest challenge but I am confident that with the likes of Skeff and money in the coffers, all will be well. I am much more fearful for the many other ponds, lakes, streams and rivers that are facing or will face similar problems in the future. Farming in the UK is likely to become far more intensive after Brexit and the current issues will only get considerably worse. We could be facing a similar period to the bad old days when much of the so called 'fresh' water in our country will in fact be polluted beyond it's current levels. The decrease or demise in the food chain from micro organisms and up, will have a devastating effect.

Redmire is a very visible tip to an iceberg - and fishing may be the Titanic.

There are and have been many carp waters that have been commercialised, plundered for stock, built on, filled, having a rail line through it, etc, etc.

Redmire - special? But so are some of the others, Wraysbury 1 group being one of them! Now a highly commercial fishery.

It is a shame - it could be rectified - but who will pay? Anglers? Regrettably and generally - a very apathetic group.

Although almost everyone on here would give a donation for it's upkeep.

Cheshunt Reservoir was filled in and built on, Longfield (Staines) was filled in to make way for the M25. I’ve seen the King George V reservoir drained and emptied, and have stood on the spot where I used to cast to and catch pike. There are many other examples I could list from experience. And don't forget all of the chalk streams that Dick Walker warned about that have suffered as a result of water abstraction.
It isn’t going to get better.

Rather than arguing over the possible causes of the decline of the pool, why don't we set up a credible crowd funding thingy. I personally don't want to fish it, have never been that interested in fishing it (because it would destroy the mystery and history for me that it once held) but I'd certainly put my hand in my very deep pockets to help restore it to its former glory... but not if, it's run as a commercial fishery as it has now become.

Trouble is it doesn't belong to us. In effect, its in someone else's back garden.

Even if this was possible, it would need a trust and trustees etc. etc.

It is up to the estate, and with Mark Walsingham's assistance, to decide what to do.
