Abu 501 junk shop find.

I picked up this Abu 501 from a local junk shop yesterday.
I payed £20 and am quite pleased with it.

Its had use and has had one or two knocks and scrapes, but overall, not in bad condition at all.

I have bought it to use and compare to my 506 and 506m.

I cleaned and re lubed it yesterday and it seems to be running well.

However, I believe that there should be a spring of some sort, underneath the tension knob on the handle.

There isnt on this one.

Does anyone on here know where I might get a spring ?
And are they really necessary ?

All the best.

The one here doesnt have anyone inside the shop.
You can look through the window and ask to see things and he will bring them and put them on a small table, outside the shop doorway, for examination.
He also asks what kind of things you are looking for and if he has anything that cant be seen, he is happy to look.

I've spent a few quid with him that mrs Wanderer doesnt know about......

But then again, Mrs wanderer doesnt tell me about all the Handbags and Shoes that seem to appear.....and I've no idea what's in those parcels that keep coming for her......

Thanks for that NiceRoach.
I've had a look and it seems a very interesting site.

Great reels, well done. I loved my early 507's for trotting.
Like a fool I sold them and regret it to this day!

I have a couple of 501s and a 506. Use the 506 mostly now. Good for light work but line bedding always was a problem with them

They are a godsend on windy days. I have two 501s that belonged to my dad. Caught many a chub on my local rivers on them in the winter. :)

For many years I've been operating my own personal junk shop - saves me leaving the house. This is the "closed face reels department". Note the Abu 507 Mk2 (Mk1) and Abu 507 Mk2 (Mk2) versions. If only any of these reels worked better than halfway decently.
The "Mitchell junk reels department" is also quite well stocked.

Were there any Abu close faced reels of that era, that were right hand wind?
