Hi all,
I have an Abu 66 which is making a pound clicking noise on turning. I have tried to solve the problem but have limited ability with these reels. The noise is coming from the main gearing somewhere and the whole reel shakes if you wind quickly. I have a 44 which runs beautifully and got a 66 to use for pike fishing. Can anyone recommend someone who could carry out the necessary work to get this reel working as it should?
Thanks in advance barbus

Re: Abu 66 repairs
you won't cure the vibration when turning the reel quickly , as the heads are not fully balanced , the 44s all do it and the larger reels moreso.
there is not much in an Abu of this type to make a clicking noise other than maybe a weak spring on the anti reverse .
my guess is dirt in the bearing . it is easy to get to . take off the spool , remove the large nut in the middle and the plate under it . give the head a good yank and it will come off . the bearing is under the circlip , just remove that and the bearing will likely fall out .
get a new one from Abu or a bearing retailer .the number will be on the bearing body .
give the new bearing a dose of Rocket Fuel (a sea tackle shop will know) or three in one oil . stick it all back together and go fishing .
all the 44 variants benefit from taking the spool head off every now and again and oiling the bearing , there is no other way of doing it properly

just a thought - make sure the bale arm release is not fouling anything in the spool head - that would do it . it won't be anything nasty - 44s don't break !

Re: Abu 66 repairs
I too seem to recall Beechmere Lake identifying the likely source of clicking noises in a 66 in an earlier thread as probably to do with the bale-arm release. The imbalance in the large-diameter rotor feels like it's wobbling when you turn the handle. It's significantly worse on my 77 than my 66---only slightly larger in diameter, but the moment of inertia scales on diameter to the fourth power.
