As mentioned in a thread about the Mitchell 710, in the bag of reels there was quite a selection and it seems he was a bit of an Abu fan. I have dozens of reels off him and the majority of them are Abu.
Here are the ones that I've kept, although the gold nosed one seems destined for the bin as it doesn't turn and the internals are sitting wrong. I'm sure I'm not alone in having many reels in my collection that don't work, but I "intend" to get them fixed. I never will.
Anyway we have a 506 and 503 in good condition. A modern close face reel and the gold reel I've mentioned.
Then, something I’ve not seen before a Shakespeare super condex, in what seems like as new condition.
Thanks for looking.

Re: Abu reels.
Very nice. The 1044 is somewhat overlooked by some vintagers I think because of its garish, non-classic looks but it is a very sound and capable reel and certainly more traditional than those awful Diplomats that followed. As for the spincast you have there and any other bin destined reels: if not fixing up then break down for spare parts is the way I might go.

Re: Abu reels.
All Swedish and sheer quality, the 506M pictured was produced specifically for the English match scene and earned a stripe on the cowl to distinguish it from the legendary 506

How does the 506M rate in the world of Abu collection/use?

Re: Abu reels.
Highly collectable in my opinion
User wise it's identical to the 506 my favourite, but the 501 which I also have was preferred by some, I've no idea why
and I've used both since the 80's mainly for Grayling and even sometimes on stillwater for small roach. The 1044 as mentioned by
Stingray is a later version with less collectable less traditional aesthetics.

Thank you gents.
I never even noticed the M. What's the full story there? I have a couple 506 but I'm yet to use one in anger.

Re: Abu reels.
I seem to remember the 506M was built with a faster retrieve at the request of Dave Harrell.

Really? Wonder if he wants to buy this one.Wallys-Cast wrote: ↑Sun Mar 08, 2020 8:50 pm I seem to remember the 506M was built with a faster retrieve at the request of Dave Harrell.

The 503, 506(M) and the 1044 will stay with me for now. I really need to spend some time going through the reels and discard the ones that I'll never fish with or repair. Still, it's a nice situation to be in. I have benefited well out of my late friend and have fished with him in mind everytime I've been out with his gear, which isn't nearly often enough.
