I think I have a Scottie Avon?

It has been suggested to me that 'SJL' is Simon John Latimer producer of the "The Light Carp Rod" film. He built his rods on Weavers blanks apparently.
I don't really understand the 'Weavers' connection?

John Weaver had the rights to the Scottie brand for a few short years.

This is after Sharpes ceased production of coarse rods.

I'm fairly sure that SJL used lined rings throughout on the rod built in "The Light Carp Rod" film. However, I've often been confused by the Light Carp Rod moniker as it has been suggested on this forum that, depending on your interpretation of the text in Drop Me A Line, the lighter rod is in fact a MkIV Carp not a MkIV Avon. The heavier carp rod being the rod Andrew Davis now builds and sells as the Whopper Stopper.

Good information gents :Hat: I have a few ScottieRod/Weavers/SJ Tackle fly rods and a number of Sharps/Farlows/Orvis/Pezon et Michel incarnations. Some are almost exactly the same, others vary greatly!

The Scottie MkIV Avon sold when Weavers had the brand is in fact a stepped up version with a nominal 1.25 lbs test curve rather than the 1lb of Walker's original design. A friend of mine had one and we thought it was a rather good rod for fishing for small carp of around 2 – 5lbs. However, the one he had looked very unusual being built from cane strips where three were heavily flamed and three very pale. The rod almost looked black and white and quite odd in my view.

Might be worth talking to Paul Cook who built and finished a lot of their rods...
