The Grebe

Post by SharkBoy »

Hi guys can anyone let me know the history behind the Grebe rod - what fish types you could expect the rod to cope with - is it a valuable rod - thinking about trying to get hold of one all the best Sharkboy

Chance is always powerful. Let your hook be always cast; in the pool where you least expect it, there will be a fish

Apparently two designs were produced the Grebe and the Grebe Major. I'm not sure of the difference. The design was intended to be a scaled down Mk4 Carp rod and I think primarily intended for things like big chub from small rivers and streams although it has a reputation of being an appropriate rod for carp stalking in confined swims.

I've only ever seen 8' 6" versions for sale so I'd say this 9' one is ultra rare. Those I've seen tend to be in very good condition and expensive due to the rarity value.

As for it's use stalking carp I'm not sure having never used one but unless the swim is very restricted I'd opt for the longer Mk4 Carp rod. My view is that the Grebe is a pretty specialist rod for which I'd want to have a very specific purpose to justify the price tag, that written it's a lovely rod to add to the collection if you are a collector and not too worried about how much use it would have.

I have seen them cheaper on ebay - but never ever cheap! About 1/2 the asking price of the one above. Perhaps they were 8"6 versions.

An 8' 6" version in great condition will typically cost £500. The one that is on ebay now or was on ebay recently (£400 or offer) was not a perfect example, the tip ring had almost certainly been rewhipped and the ring possibly replaced. In a bit over 25 years of using and collecting cane coarse rods I have never, ever seen a 9' version for sale anywhere. I'd say it's about as rare as a B.James Built to Endure logo rod, no rarer still. Of course I may have been looking the other way when the few that probably exist were sold!
