When did they stop making B.James rods

Post by Julian »

Lots of info already on this section of the forum about which models have which type of B James transfer on them ( ie Ealing, London England or just England), but when did they stop making the MKIV, MKIV Avon and S/U MKIV with the B James insignia on them.

ie What is the latest year one of these rods would have been made?

It's not made clear here:

But clearly 1959 has them in Upwood already, I don't think cane was ever made there so the last ones must pre-date '59?

Yet here our own Chris Ball talks of them being made up until 1966:

So that seems to be inconsistent.........not a lot of help, sorry :Chuckle:

So, I assume , from the info there Nobby it would seem if you have one of the later types - normally with bulbous (doughnut) shaped handle, lighter coloured cane, and inscription of 'B.James and son London England', the rod would have or sometime between 1958 and 1966?
This would place my stepped-up MKIV as being made in that period. Useful to me as I'd like to be using a reel with it manufactured round about the same time.

Certainly the S/U was a later rod, but I have no idea of dates.

Think the date given on the Bruce & Walker website of forming and running the company from Upwood is incorrect - it should read 1969.
