Hardy Wanless 7ft 9/10 ring spacing

Post by OldTackle »

Hello everyone.

Would someone please be so kind and measure the distance between the tip ring and first ring on his Hardy Wanless 7ft 9/10 lb? Or someone might know. On mine it seems a bit short with 2,75 inches.
Thanks in advance.

Chris

Hi Chris,
on mine the distance from the end of the tip ring to the centre of the next ring is 3 1/2 inches.

Hi Wal. Is it the 7 ft version? And are both sections exactly the same lengths?

Yes Chris it is but I also have a 8ft and a 10ft version if you want the size from those.

Hi Wal.

Sorry for the late reply. I need to know if the ring spacing on my 7ft 9/10 Wanless is correct or if I need to adjust the spacing a little bit. What could be an indication that my tip section is missing a small fraction? When I lay both parts next to each other they are not the exact same length. Ferrule included in measurements.

Hi Chris,
sorry I now see what you mean. I have included a photo of my 7ft Wanlass tip section against the butt section for comparison. They are both perfectly level at the other end and the difference is 1 1/8".
Hope this helps.

Hi Wal.

Many thanks. What is that in cm? From the total lengths it seems to be alright then. On mine there also only is one intermediate between tip ring and first ring. Even though it looks as if the ring is put a little too close to the tip. When looking at the full rod I always think the tip is too short by breakage and the tip ring just placed on the left over. May we compare all the spacings?
Handle top first ring: 51 cm - 44.4 cm - 21.5 cm - 19.6 cm - 17.0 cm - 14.2 cm - 7.7 cm
See the last step is quite short.

Hi Chris,
it is worth remembering that although they are classed as 7ft rods, the later versions of Hardy Wanless rods are generally around 6ft 10 inches long.

I have measured mine and the overall handle length is 370mm. from top of the handle to the first ring is 498mm, then 427mm - 217mm - 198mm - 168mm - 115mm - 91mm. Overall length of rod is 2085mm.

I have measured an earlier 4lb version at 7 ft - 1 inch long (2155mm) overall and the ring spacing's etc are as follows.
Handle length is 385. top of handle to first ring is 340, then 270mm - 265mm - 262mm - 198mm - 171mm -142mm - 122mm. Overall length of rod is 2155mm

2015 mm in total 385 mm handle is what mine is measuring. When layer flat next to each other my sections look exactly like yours from lengths. A sign of the hand making possibly? Mine is quite old. The serial is E92150.

I might consider to mvd my first run a little bit towards the second at some time. So far I am glad that it wasn't shortened at some point.

Thank you so much.

Chris,
there does seem to be a bit of "Artistic Licence" when it comes to ring spacings on Hardy rods. I have two 9ft-6in Hardy LRH spinning rods and the ring spacing's differ by up to 15mm on some of the rings.
.
The serial No E92150 dates your rod to 1954.
My 9/10lb rod is serial No H23695 which dates it to 1959 and my 4lb rod is serial No E24586 which dates it to 1932.

Wal.
