Chapman Dennis Pye 700
Had a blinding visit to a car boot sale on Saturday, with some good purchases including a near immaculate looking but "faulty" ABU 506 for £2 (which just needed the line untangling from the shaft under the press cap!) and a Chapmans Dennis Pye 700 three piece which I'm hoping I didn't pay over the odds for.... was £5 too much?
The varnish and whippings need replacing but the cane is sound and all of the rings are in good condition apart from some rusting on the tip ring. My question is, was this rod ever supplied with lined butt and tip rings? The current ones look to be original but I'm tempted to change them whilst in the process of refurbishing.
Also the Chapmans label is in the form of a script written transfer, as opposed to the oval gold ones I've seen before. Does this predate or postdate the oval label?
Your thoughts and knowledge will, as always, be gratefully received Gents

That is a great result. Well spotted!
Can't help you with the label though. I wasn't aware they had one.

I think the gold label predates the script label as one can still get the script label.
Thanks

Would you like to double your money on this rod?
If you have no grease with you, and your rings are full of ice, do not cut out the ice with a pen-knife but get your man to put the rings one by one in his mouth, and so to thaw the ice.

Re: Chapman Dennis Pye 700
Well done, the Dennis Pye rod is a particularly good find! I am not sure about the gold label/transfer dating. My guess is that the gold oval label is earlier than the transfer, as I know that some years ago John Chapman stopped sending transfers to people requesting them, as some of them finished up on NON Chapman rods!

Great find Alex, well done.
Yes the earlier rods had copper wire overwhipping on the lower leg of butt ring and at the ferrules. These rods are always gold oval labels. Maybe I should say all the ones I have seen have had the gold oval labels.

I meant to add. The deluxe rods from Chapmans had lined butt and tip rings however I dont know if there was a 700 de luxe.

Re: Chapman Dennis Pye 700
There are several Dennis Pye rods on that auction site - from a 2 section to 3 section rods - for comparison.
I have one too at the back of a cupboard - I will get it out and have a look.
