mending line

Post by St.John »

how do you chaps do it when fishing across stream into a slack? i try to flick a D in the line (similar to when fly casting) during the cast and also mid trot, however it is tricky to get it to to work well without messing up the flow of the float. any tips??

I lift the rod tip. like into a roll cast and flick it back over the faster water.

After a while you'll get good at it and you'll flick it without moving the fly. :Thumb:

Use a really, really heavy float that you can lean against, fish with an upstream wind or use a waggler.

or a feeder

All you can do is reel as the float goes down stream, I hooked that Grayling at thirty yards a couple of days ago, I was using the mitchell 300 with the bail open, all you can do is keep in touch with the float as much as possible, without changing it's direction.

Like fly fishing flick the slack over the faster water, release line as you need it and if too much reel the slack in and take the bail off again.

I've perfected this method over the years since not owning a centre pin. Centre pins are next on my list as I haven't used them yet.

Oiling the line with floatant makes it a lot easier. And of course a heavy float is harder to shift during a mend.

i'm using around 5-6 bb floats with the centrepin. i'll give oiling the line a whistle.
