I live fifty yards from the River Beane in Walkern. Its a sorry sight most of the time till the river floods which then becomes dangerous. Its a far cry from Dick Walkers beloved Beane further downstream.
My 93 year old pal Bill used to tell me about the Watercress beds above the sluice when he was younger, now the river has basically silted up and not what it used to be.

I used to live in Watton at Stone and my garden backed onto the Beane, they have restricted the abstraction volume and are carrying out numerous projects such as restricting the width and removing the weirs in Watton and on the Woodhall Estate to try and resurrect what was a pure chalk stream in years gone by.

Interesting Dollar. I had a snoop about Watton a few months ago. I sent down Mill Lane, over the river to have a look. It looked far different to Walkern and in parts had some flow. Do you ever fish the river at Watton, was there any fish life?

Sorry GG - seems I missed your post of "long ago"!

Trout stocking takes place regularly - other coarse fish are present - but seldom caught it seems.

I moved about 5 years ago, I lived in the village for over 50 years man and boy
Probably 50 yrs ago now , my Father used to work in the gravel pits at Broxbourne and there was a water suction device that obviously “picked” a few fish and he would bring a bucket of mainly perch to stock the Beane that I used to fish for.
Before I moved there was a small shoal of roach but I never fished for them otherwise plenty of sticklebacks and the dreaded crayfish.
Further down on the Woodhall Estate they are carrying major works and there used to plenty of fish in the farm stretch
