The Lost Rivers of London

Post by Tengisgol »

I thought that this was fascinating, particularly the suggestion that London's best salmon fishing used to be the River Tyburn which is now buried underneath Buckingham Palace!

I went to Fleet road school, just down the road from Hampstead in 1953, the River Fleet had long since gone underground and I believe ran under Fleet Street in central London.

The Effra was supposed to run underneath the block of flats I lived in between the Oval and the Elephant and Castle, looking at the map in the BBC program it was certainly in the area, as an aside the work the Wild Trout Trust is doing with its 'Trout in the Town/Cities scheme shows what can be done in restoring urban / industrial area streams.

London at one time had a lot of rivers nearly all have either dried up or now flow underground.

That's an interesting piece, fortunately South London fares much better and although there are trout, I have yet to come across any salmon.

Charles Rangley Wilson??? did a fishing programme about these rivers a few years ago. He was trying to catch a trout within the M25.

It is a fascinating subject..

I have a book called the lost rivers of London by NJ Barton, it lists in its index 14 rivers and 5 "dubious lost rivers"
I've not read it for many years, I have it next to me for a quick peruse sometime.
There are 2 types of people in this world.... those that "get" fishing .... and those that don't
