Coppermill Stream at Walthmstow Reservoirs

Post by Tench Dreamer »

Coppermill stream is a tribuatory to the Lea up at the reservoirs at Walthmstow.....Today I took a walk along it and what a fine small stream it looks. I believe that there are so fine Chub in it.

Any of you fine Anglers out there with any experiences of fishing it?

I may well give it a bash before the Fair 14th!

There were monster roach and perch there in the 90's as well as big chub and barbel... not easy to catch though...

It has an interesting history. Historically, I have friends who had barbel and big perch (over four pounds). There were also many big roach.

I think it has suffered two tragedies in recent years. I have a recollection that it ran dry (or was deliberately drained down) and also that the 'Black Death from above' has ravaged it.

However, those are just rumours from afar. It certainly has the pedigree so well worth getting a better updated source for an update.

I fished walthamstow reservoirs in the 80s, catching many good bags of roach to 1lb 10ozs floatfishing mainly bread. The coppermill stream was always a difficult water to fish being very clear with a very careful approach needed.I never had anything of note from it, although I did concentrate on the reservoir trying for a two pounder! A change of job resulted in me not being able to fish it for some years, by the time I was able to fish again the fishing had deteriorated. I would suggest going to the gatehouse where tickets can be bought and enquiring about the current "state of play" I know that at one time some years ago, there was a large resident flock of cormorants on one of the islands, the trees were black with them!

Used to fish there a few years back and was renowned for its big roach, there are still a few big fish there but are ridiculously difficult  there's also still some very good perch there aswell which used to come out on minnow live baits,
I believe it's still day ticket from the office of the Walthamstow complex in ferry lane :Ok:

All the best
