I would also like to know !
I have made rod handles and floats for quite a lot of years from wine corks and never ever boiled them , what is the benefit ?

They taste fabulous a sprinkle of sea salt and some pressed garlic. :whistle:

Sparking wine corks are compressed. They look like a wheat sheaf. If you boil them they regain their cylindrical shape. I do mine in the microwave. Bowl of covered water.

Here's an older photo of mine, showing pre & post boiling. I've even used this on misshapen wine corks.
I find it relaxes the cork and they're easier to work with...
