chapman 500 name / logo on rod
Thanks to all for advice on my last post. Ive been examining my 500 in more detail - all seems fine and its in great condition. However I have a slight concern re the name since there is no transfer logo. Is this a problem?!
Thanks.

It will reduce the value if you want to sell it, but it will be just as nice to use.

Crucian carp, thanks for your reply. Im not so much worried about the value detraction, im more concerned about authenticity - another question therefore might be whether it is common for 500's to have lost their original logos?SeanM wrote:It will reduce the value if you want to sell it, but it will be just as nice to use.

I've never seen a 500 without it's logo, but that doesn't mean your's isn't one. The best way to calm your fears would be to measure the tapers and rod furnishings...The info you need is here....http://www.chapmanblanks.co.uk/wordpress/?page_id=730

Yes, it's fairly common but some restorers have been able to "find' the original Chapmans small gold oval badge.Ezeeman wrote:Crucian carp, thanks for your reply. At least your restorer's could be described as original, it wouldn't say Avon on the rod either, I'm pretty sure.

Grayling, I've had a look at the specification s on the chapman site. Thanks for pointing it out. My rod seems to measure up, although measuring t he tapers is a bit of a challenge for a novice like me! Are said badges easy to come by and to affix?

Re: chapman 500 name / logo on rod
I reckon that you can maybe a restorer on TFF has a secret supply.
However I'm certain they can be reproduced an amateur (all my efforts) trial and error method would be
to photograph the logo, sized correctly, then printed on water slide decal paper, I've seen mentioned on
this forum, available on ebay.
I've never tried this but I'm sure it can be done, - some earlier Chapmans have a written Logo, and not a transfer.

Re: chapman 500 name / logo on rod
Personally speaking, of course, I'd be keeping the rod as I acquired it ... unless I'd paid for a rod (and at the price) described as "original and un-restored."
Cloning (copying/manufacturing/ripping off) manufacturers stickers won't make it fish any better, and is something I will never do. I have a Sealey rod which I believe to be of a certain model, but I won't be making labels to put on it proclaiming that. I'll probably write on it "Believed to be ..."
You're lucky as Chapman's still exist. If I was desperate for authenticity ... I'd take it to Chapman's and ask them to verify it as one of their 500's ... and offer to buy a sticker from them if they accept it as their manufacture.
As I said ... this is simply my opinion.

Re: chapman 500 name / logo on rod
Mal have you tried putting one of the original Chapman oval sticker,s on a rod, they are very thin gold leaf water slide type and about 60 years old and very very fragile, I took two 500,s to Chapman,s (they only supply transfers if you take the rod,s to them) to get a couple of transfers, John gave me twelve and said they are so hard to put on you will be back for more, i gave up and fitted the black writing type these you just position on the rod and rub the back of the paper with a coin and peel the paper off.AshbyCut wrote: You're lucky as Chapman's still exist. The black written logo type was fitted to the later rod,s with the oval gold leaf type fitted to the early rod,s
