Milwards Specialist Spinning Rod

Post by SeanM »

Here's a lovely little rod that I've just finished restoring. It's an 8ft light spinning rod labelled "A Specialist Rod by Milward" I know they did a series of fly rods labelled Specialist, but I've never come across a spinning rod before this one. I'd say the rod would be rated at around 4lb line so it will probably have been intended for spinning and worming for trout.

The rod was in terrible condition when I got it. The aluminium butt cap had completely corroded away and much of the other furnitue was badly pitted. I managed to recover the reel bands and winding check and I found a butt cap from a Sealey match rod that fitted. The dark cane is in fine condition and the original nickel silver-butt and tip rings cleaned up nicely. I replicated the original whippings of silve/black jasper tipped with black, but I used black rather than jasper for the inters as I think it looks better.

The rod will do nicely for perch fishing and will make an ideal little starter rod for my granddaughter.

That indeed does look lovely. Has made up my mind to try and find something similar as a little stalker rod.

Splendid work. Looks a cracking little spinning rod.
Erm... excuse my ignorance (silly question probably) but I keep hearing mention of a 'winding check'. What is a winding check if you please?

Thanks chaps!

The winding check is the little aluminium disc at the top of the handle.

Very nice indeed. I have a bit of a soft spot for spinning rods, memories of childhood fishing

Looks most excellent, Sir. Well done.

Looks to me like your Grandaughter is a very lucky little girl Sean!!
