Vintage Black Jappaned Fishing Tackle Box

Post by Michael »

Yesterday whilst returning from our Sons flat in Balham, (I do dislike driving in London!) we got lost in the back roads of Wandsworth, and happened upon a corner junk shop. Sitting on a pasting table outside the shop, I spotted a black metal box. Needing a break I thought I`d investigate further and we parked up and wandered back to the shop. On looking at it and recognising it was a black japanned fishing tackle/lure box I went in. A rather rude, belching etc, drunk chap, sat by the counter, I proffered the box. The chap looked up and grunted, "what are you willing to pay" . I thought hell I`d give it a go, "fiver OK", he said yes. I paid and we were out the shop in a flash.....

A little spruce up and it`ll be useful for all those odds and sod.....

Nice one Merlot, you got a good bargain there.

Anyway....here it is.
As Merlot got one for a fiver, i'll give you a fiver for it :Chuckle:

From the outside it appears the same, it has the one internal compartment with single lid, on the top tier and differently designed compartments. The outer paint work on the box is utterly knackered, someone decided that black hammerite & Black matt was the most suitable paint to use, I may remove, not sure?

Def. remove - and then repaint black before shellacing over the top: I've been experimenting with this myself and it gives as close a finish to japanning as you can get without delving into the world of arcane chemistry (you should read some of those old japanning recipes!).
