Is there such a thing as a traditional disgorger?

In my Junior Starter Kit circa Christmas 1963 I had, along with a rod, reel, line, hooks, shot and porcupine quill floats, a disgorger. It was a metal rod with a ring at one end and a flattened area at the business end into which was cut a 'V' which you used to extract the hook. It was a brutal pice of kit but effective for all that.

I progressed in time to a device that had a pig's tail twist at the end of the shaft, this was put on the line as you probed for the hook and was to give a more effective action against the hook, it was subsequently improved by the barrel design that seems to be the most popular today. I dislike the plastic variety and prefer the nice shiny stainless steel ones for some reason although I used to fish the Drains in Somerset and would often come across a man who arrived in his Rolls Royce! He used a disgorger that was the same design as my favourite however, his was made of solid gold!!! :o

Anyway, how old are the various designs, was there a natural progression or did I just come by them in the sequence I suggest?

The metal ones I had were in Aluminium or Dural but only one left - they sink, sadly. It's plastic ones for me now.

Our local tackle shop still sells the Aluminium ones.

Had a quick look in Angling Ways, both 1934 and 63 versions; both only mention forked disgorgers.

Just found a diagram of a barrel disgorger made of brass in Mirror of Angling published 1937.

I remember the aluminium tube disgorgers appearing in my local tackle shop in the late 60s so I'd always assumed they were a recent invention, but I've since found them listed in the 1938 Allcocks guide so I assume cost must have been the reason that the cruder designs continued to be available for so long.

Does anyone know anything about the old "shepherd's crook" one in the photo?
There are no markings on it at all.

I'd forgotten all about that design (shepherd's crook) MD, and I'm amazed that you have managed to collect or retain such an easily lost tackle item.
