I have a couple of old Farlows fly reels that have a lead finish.
They are a bit grubby, what would be a good method for cleaning them without removing the finish?

Just warm soapy water on a sponge if it is just dirty grime.
I use a little lighter petrol on a paper towel to remove oil grime, then soapy water

As recommended above.
I was also advised to give my reel a polish with a silicon impregnated cloth, aka gunsmith’s cloth, once the reel is fully dried after cleaning.
It gives the reel a lovely feel, adds to the patina, and it’s strangely easy to see water beading on the surface when it gets splashed.

Are we talking about a lead paint finish?
When I am polishing the paintwork on my reels, I use Carnuba car wax (I think I got it from Halfords?), which also removes tarnish on metal rather well.
It does mildly cut the finish, so you have to be careful on the edges. I use it a lot; great stuff.
