Clean and restore old wicker and canvas bag

Hi Chaps

About nine months back I treated myself to a very “needful “ thing (ref. Stephen King novel/to film).
A wicker and canvas creel in of indeterminate age and maker but in amazing condition. Apart from a general clean up and some leather strap work all I would like to do is clean up the the canvas bag which is a little dirty and has a few rust stains from the buckles.
My question is what is the best way to clean up the canvas. General advice from the WWW is soft soap and hand wash or sponging down and rinsing.
Any tips or tricks ?
