Magpie tail. Clyde style night fly (wet tutorial)

The magpie tail is a great fly that can be fished to catch fish in both river and loch. This very simple and yet prolific Clyde fly is a pattern that is fished during dusk and through the night. Representing a fry the magpie tail is known to take the bigger trout that may feed under the cover of darkness including sea trout. The fly can also be used as a low water salmon fly, making the magpie tail a great all round pattern.

A size 12 is the norm for the river, but I’ve tied mine on a heavy size 8 with a sprout bend which I can use for any predatory fish wether trout, perch or even pike. The black floss is not normally used, but it does help to bulk up the body on a big hook, and therefore I’ve used it here.

The crow and silver is a very similar fly, the only difference being the crow and silver has a solid silver body.

Great looking fly Ian. I should try that for some large mouth bass.
