Fly Tying Book Recommendations!

Post by Santiago »

Only just starting to get into tying my own trout flies! Can anyone recommend a good book on the subject for novices, with plenty of nice illustrations in with clear instructions. Thanks.

I'm aware of YouTube etc., but don't want to go down that route!

Before I say this I must state I really haven’t tried very much! When I did however, I found YouTube to be brilliant and particularly Davie McPhail (search for him plus ‘fly tying’). The beauty of this is you can pause and rewind frame by frame to follow the steps at your own pace. I know it isn’t the same as a book to hold and work through mind!

Hope that helps!

Fly Tying Bible by Peter Gathercole, invaluable for the budding fly tyer :Thumb:

I found the below very good.

ImageImage.

Detailed step by step instructions with a good bit of history to each of the featured fly patterns.
The author is Australian so some of the tyings are variations of the originals but all very fisheable.

In the US, there are two books that I know of that get great reviews and I have them both and will say they are top notch books. Both have fantastic photos, detailed step by step instructions, and more. Charlie's Basic Fly tying is probably the best selling tying book in America.

Also, you tube Davie McPhail fly tying. That man is a master at tying and he makes it so simple.

Agreed on the Davie McPhail YT videos, he's a great bloke too. Books wise I'd recommend anything by Skip Morris :Hat:

Cheers, I watched one of his videos yesterday and couldn't believe how quickly he ties his flies. Very impressive.

I learned a few patterns from Davie and still have many more from him I want to learn. He ties the John Story fly and its very similar to our Renegade. I want to tie the John Story to see if it works as well as the Renegade in the creeks I fish.

Davie is so calm in his videos and is never in a hurry but gets the flies tied in short time because he has been doing this for such a long time.

One of the tricks to tie in short time is to have all your material out and ready to use.
