Taught myself a new skill - rebinding a book

I have always had a desire to see if I could do this so decided to give it a try. This was a book from a box that I bought a few months ago. ‘Life in Ponds and Streams’ by W Furneaux from 1906. Not particularly valuable but a fabulous piece of work.

As you can see from the pictures, what was left of the cover was held together by bits of old tape that was also held together by…bits of old tape! The replacement materials were purchased from Shepherds in London, albeit by mail order. Thereafter a few YouTube videos, basic tools, patience and concentration.

I am really proud of that! Something I’m not sure we’ve seen here before either!

Hi Phil, that is an exceptional job !

I have a few old books that have seen better days but just accepted that I would have to look after them and put up with their condition .
You have made a terrific job of your rebinding, a million miles from the usual angling rebuilds .I would be very nervous about removing the covers .

Well done !

David

I had an angling book restored, recovered, re-sown, etc. now almost as new! The restorers run courses which I was offered but it involved a bit of traveling unfortunately.

Since then I have found similar courses elsewhere nearer home!

That was a leap of faith Phil, certainly not a challenge for the feint hearted.
Excellent job :Thumb:

Well done for attempting that project and at least 50 Points for Gryffindor for the excellent quality.

That is a wonderful job Phil, well done! You clearly have two qualities that I sadly lack, patience and concentration! :surrender:
