Re: First ever fly
Well done, that will catch fish. When you put the hook in the vice make sure the point is hidden or it will catch the thread as you wind, usually just before you tie off!

Great 1st effort Josh, it will catch, tie some Stewart's blake spiders, very easy fish catchers.
If you want to tie north country flies, Mike Hardins book is a good guide

Re: First ever fly
Nothing much wrong with that fly and it's pretty good for a first attempt.

I'll second that. Not a disaster on the big Sea Trout 'lures' I mostly tied but unwelcome when tying small delicate concoctions.Nigel Rainton wrote: ↑Tue Jan 26, 2021 6:23 am Well done, that will catch fish. Re: First ever fly
That’s a great looking wee flee.
I can remember many moons ago tying my first fly and then proceeding to catch a small brown trout on it.
I must admit that I haven’t tied a fly for many years now.
I can remember when I was a young lad visiting our local tackle shop and the owner standing tying flies with no vice just years of experience.
He gave me some beautiful salmon flies which I still have today.

Re: First ever fly
Nice work Josh. Stick at it and take the advice about hiding the hook point inside the jaws of the vice.

Re: First ever fly
Good work BF! Knocks spots off my 1st attempts. There's nothing quite like catching on your own creations! Less is always more with the spiders - fewer turns of a shorter hen hacklle and max 3 turns of peacock herl for river trouting 'North Country' style. Forget any overpriced books and concentrate on the excellent YouTube footage from the likes of Davie McPhail would be my advice. I've a huge library on fly dressing so just give me shout if you want to borrow anything or I'll happily Whatsapp you pics of any relevant info, just drop me a PM
