The Carp - Palakona

Post by AndyPop »

Does anyone possess one of these? I tried to snaffle one in an auction about a month ago, had a waggle with it & all felt good, didn't look like many anglers in the room so thought I might have usable but not perfect rod for maybe £150. Needless to say £340 + commission later, I'm glad I spent my cash elsewhere on a Young's Mk iv at a quarter of the price!

Most auction houses are on-line these days.

One just types the word 'Hardy' into a search engine like this and reaches for the 'phone:

That said, having assisted a friend in such pursuit, there are a lot of auction houses out there exagerating the 'estimated' price to encourage the sellers to sell, whilst giving any telephone enquirer a very positive.....perhaps far TOO positive idea of the rod's condition.

I certainly won't be making any bids....you're safer on eBay! Far, far safer.

I had thought that going to a non-specialist auction instead of someone like Mullock's would have given me a better chance of picking up a bargain. I'd done my homework & though that the price would be right in a general antique sale. Then again a Kennett Perfection went for £240 so obviously I wasn't alone in thinking that! Still the Hardy felt a nice rod, just would have been nicer in my hand on the bank.

andypop, was it you that bought the Young's of Harrow MK1V carp rod
on ebay recently, Paul Cook suggest's in another post that it is made
using Bob Southwell blanks. I think you probably picked up a real bargain there.

Alas it isn't me who purchased from ebay, I don't normally buy from there, & if I do it wouldn't be a rod as it's too risky, although I have sold a few, some i shouldn't have done including a Precision R.Sealey's Festival, that I couldn't be bothered to renovate. Thought I saw that resold for over £500 ( a bit gutted! )

Would that have been the restored Festival sold by Ryan Burns recently.

The Young's MK1V you refer to, is that a Young's of Harrow rod with
the Otter brand transfer.

Yes I watched that rod, but it wasn't a Mark IV, it was a fair bit heavier. Unusual screw-down brass reel clamp.

It could be Southwell or Olivers cane, Clive Young only had equipment to make a three piece ten foot rod and bought in blanks form either, Paul said.

I think it went for £90 ( ish )...pick-up only from Aylesbury......I was tempted.....but it did look a bit of a beast.

As to the non-specialist auctions...I guess the power of Google has made them all experts.....at finding a good price to tell the prospective seller...Sadly none of them can assess a rod's condition it seems...even Mullocks!

I've seen a number of Hardy Palakona Carp rods fetch very high money. I'd have thought at £340 if in very good to mint condition would represent a good deal but perhaps not a bargain. There is one on the net for sale at about £700!

£400 – £500 is typical for an excellent to near mint example. All those I've seen don't have lined butt rings and I always think it a shame that Hardy's didn't use the same style agate lined rings as James.
