Sharpes "Aberdeen " 10' 6" fly rod
I have just bought another cane rod, it's becoming a habit ! This rod is said to be in new condition and I can't wait for the postman to arrive. I'll post some pictures when it arrives. Was anyone on here 'watching' it ?

Re: Sharpes "Aberdeen " 10' 6" fly rod
The rod arrived this morning in an extremely strong plastic tube, for which I was grateful, and it took me ages to remove the tape, packing and bubble wrap. The rod is a time capsule, from the marks on the reel seat I would guess it's only been used a few times.
The bag is clean and has a Sharpes of Aberdeen label. The rod was made in September 1964 and has been well looked after since leaving the factory.
It has a down-locking reel fitting which I prefer.
This rod could have been made last week. It's condition is amazing given it's age. I will use this rod on special occasions, perhaps during the mayfly season and on glorious summer evenings when tricky casts with a fast rod are not required.
I can't believe that this rod is now in my possession :-)

Looks lovely! Copper whippings for the ferrules. I think the Aberdeen range were salmon and sea trout rods. The other 10ft 6in ones that I have seen have been rated for a #7 line. It would make a good rod for drifting from a boat on a big water. Probably what it was designed for?
Quot homines, tot sententiae.

Sean,
The length suggests a loch rod or sea trout. It's single handed and I think #7 would be too much. I will try it with a few weights. I don't plan to cast far, the river is narrow and I only fish the lake margins. It should roll cast nicely. Just using it a couple of times a year will be enough :-)

Looks nice. Are cane fly rods heavy on the cast.

Ally,
Short answer, Yes. My Hardy #4 weighs about 2ozs. The Sharpes is about 10ozs!

Jeremy,
Thank you, it is a very fine rod. I polished it this afternoon, the reel seat was a little grubby but the rest of the rod was immaculate. The cane is dark and the nodes are staggered 3x3. A fine companion for my Bob Southwell rod :-)
