i bought this reel to restore it to a nice working reel, it has a few difficult problems i have to solve. the pin holder and latch are tighten with iron screws and half rotten by rust. Rust expands so it was not possible to get them out the normal way but have to drill them out to release the pin holder and latch in the first time to clean them but also to make repairs on the Ebonite plate and rings. there also iron screws in the distance pillars and also half gone by rust. I have to make a decision to drill these screws out as well or leave them and try to fix the Ebonite on a different way










When the reel is finished i post more pictures from the hole process

Have you tried heating the screws with the tip of a soldering iron, it may help to loosen them.

Try soaking the screws with WD 40 every couple of hours or so through the course of a day before heating with a soldering iron as JW suggests above.
I would also try Jenolite rust remover.
If you can scrape out the slot to get a screw driver to fit, tapping the screw driver as you turn it sometimes helps.
Failing that you can buy a screw extractor, these are inexpensive and work reasonably well.

The reel is made from Ebonite so heating it up is no option i think, i drilled a few out and i think i leave the other screws in there and try to do the repairs a other way, Thanks JW

I try to scrape the slot out as well and tapping it out, how ever there is not much left from the slot and makes it very difficult. the screws are very small as well that makes it more difficult to drill a hole in it to use a screw extractor, the screw head could brake off as well
The screw head are only 3 - 4 mm wide. the reel is also made from Ebonite and makes it difficult to get them out without damage to the Ebonite

The reel starts to look good and when i cleaned the rim brake a Patent number shows up under the layer dirt, No 7019. on a other post here on TFF the number corresponds with the year 1888. Wow that is a long time ago.
The metal bands are not nickel plated but silver plated that make it a very interesting reel

The reel finished to day, it was a difficult job but manged it to make it work again. i learned new some new skills and i am very pleased with the result as it is.

The ratchet spring must be replaced, the old one that was in there was broken when i try to clean it, it was a steel spring and rusted until there was not much left off it but will find a good one for the reel
