I treated myself with this reel upon reaching a certain age------27-----recently and found an anomaly with the back plate engraving. It is lacking the legend "The Match Aerial". Garry Mills told me he had never noticed one without it. Has any TFFer got or has seen one without the reel name engraved upon the backplate?

What a fine example John well done! I know that you were joking about your certain age being 27, it is really 38! :Chuckle: With regard to the engraving missing the Aerial Match, I checked photo's of the one that I owned last year and mine had it. Perhaps an air raid took place and they didn't have time to finish engraving one of the batches of Aerial Matches? :surrender:

I have just had a look at my reel which says 'The Aerial Match' directly below the Stag Logo - it also has REG DESIGN No.689467 directly below the S.Allcock & Co Ltd. Redditch England. A fantastic reel and a great joy to use.

Legend or no legend, it's a lovely reel.

This one was recently with Garry Mills...no reel name no design registration number:

So for the short period they were made there were engraving differences, a line guard-less model....and perhaps a LHW model too???

How strange as mine looked like the one in the photo ! Plus it does not have the Ariel Match logo so i don’t think it was on all the reels

:-) A remarkable co-incidence, Martin..... Actually for those of you who didn't see this reel at Romsey or hadn't heard, Martin was kind enough to let me photograph and measure his reel after a recent minor repair by the Mill Tackle Company. The hope is that Watermole+ will one day have a bash at making one!

Rare old reels and never ever cheap to buy....so I'm particularly grateful to Martin for both his trust and his generosity.

The 9053 type 1 was a whopping £2.10p when is was new in 1939.........I should have ordered a dozen....
In the same year the 4" popular was the same price but the 7950 T10 was 75p. more That is a full 35% more...... Odd when you consider from a manufacturing point of view it was a lot quicker to make a pop or a T10 and that is when labour costs were comparatively very little...
You have to wonder where Allcocks viewed the future with or without ww2... The t10 continued until two years after ww2...
