New project a home made centrepin 4''

a few weeks a go i bought a lathe for metal turning, noting special but it works the way i want so i did some tests before i start using the lathe and started to make plans to build my own Centrepin reel 4'' from aluminium bar that i bought 12cm in diameter :-) it is the first time i use a lathe to turn metal with, i have a small wood turning lathe to make floats and other small parts but this is something complete different.
i have in my mind to make a classic 4 '' centrepin with wooden backplate. First thing i did was make the alloy bar smaller to cut a piece off, it was too big an too heavy to work with and too much for the lathe, not a easy job but managed to get it done.
first ring from the spool is almost there and i have to say that i am pleased with the first results so far, i will keep you informed on every step i make in this project. and here are the first pictures

The first ring almost cut off but give it a polish before i take it off

Exciting stuff Evert - I have always wanted to make a reel myself.

I will be following your progress with keen interest :Thumb:

Thank you for sharing with us.

Cheers
Steve

Has above. Love these projects, plenty of pictures and good luck on the build. Wish I could turn my hand to such a thing.

Thanks gents,
Today i cut off the front ring and made the bottom ring, next step is thinking about the back plate, i have wood in my mind but not sure so i make a wooden backplate first with a brass cross on the back for the reel feet

Now i also need to drill some holes in the rings, for the spokes and pillars and some bigger holes to make it lighter

Looking good so far Evert - how do you plan to drill the holes? Will you make a jig for a pillar dril?

Cheers
Steve

Coming along very nicely Evert, well done.
I wouldn't know where to start but I think I would have drilled the pillar holes before parting the two plates just to make sure they lined up correctly but no doubt you have a cunning plan.
The hub will probably be the most tricky part to make, really looking forward to seeing this progress.

Wal.

I am sure we will all want one when you have completed yours! I am sure it will be excellently made as all your other items are - so good so far!

So keep a check of the expenses --------------------?
