Restoration project.
Earlier this week I received a lovely old reel as a gift from Ron (Kirpan) and thought would be a great restoration project for over the winter. However, as usual I couldn't resist dismantling it to see what would be required to get it up and running again.
It has certainly been a reel of quality with its nickel silver rimmed, ebonite backplate and full cage line guard.
Once fully dismantled I realised this wasn't going to be a winter project, I just had to get started on it so a quick clean up of the parts then I'll start on the new spool face plate.
The original has been changed at some time as it is quite crudely made compared to the reel and a bad choice of timber had been used but it was probably all the repairer could find at the time and I must admit a lot of work went into it as it doesn't look to have been made on a lathe, more cut out by hand so credit to him for perseverance.
Next time I'll be making the new face plate and have decided on Tufnol as it will stay straight and still be strong with the groove cut in the back to take the line guard cage. Plus I already have some
Wal.

What a lovely thing to be working on.
This is going to be one to watch I think!

I knew the pathway like the back of my hand
I felt the earth beneath my feet
Sat by the river and it made me complete.

Can't wait for the next instalment. I love these project threads. Looking good, mate.

Interesting project Wal. It looks like a Slater pioneer. It would have had a ventilated ebonite face. Some good Slater info and pictures of the pioneer on the old pure piscator website.
