Trotting Trent Trotters

Hello everyone,

I've made a float, that should be used as a Trent trotter. Well, in my case a Regnitz trotter.
Image

I'd like to use it on a very shallow, fast and turbulent swim with a lot of snags (rocks, weed, bicycles, shopping trolleys, ...). There are good trout around but also chub and barbel.

Is there anyone who's got some expertise in using this float pattern? There is a thread or two covering the Trent trotter but they're more or less theoretical.
What about the size of the float? The one in the picture is actually my first attempt - I'm going to make a few more with more subtle tips.

Looking foreward to any advice

Greetings from Bamberg

I think there's a good chapter on them in Billy Lane''s book, The Encyclopedia of Floats, and since he invented the Trent Trotter he's worth reading! Apparently, he broke an avon during a match on the Trent, and just reversed it so he could carry on fishing. His swim was only 2' deep and he caught many more using the upside down broken float.

That's good. I've just ordered Billy Lane's book. It should arrive next week. If only one could still talk to Mr Lane ...

Firebird has the shotting spot on.

The thing to recall with this float is that there is a shot placed below it gripping both the line on the hook side AND the line on the reel side. There are also other shot...one to actually drag the bottom on the reel side and a couple of others to sink the hook-length down.

It was used for fishing swims so shallow that no other float could work across them.

Here's the image from Billy's book with a bunch of chubber and Puddle-Chucker floats:

When trotting in a strong wind - a shot above the float does help! And even when using a waggler in stillwater, providing it is not too deep.

Excellent float I have used them in slightly deeper water than Billy Lane recommended them for, up to about 4 feet and they work very well.
The way Billy shotted these floats in very unusual but I can confirm its very effective
Highly recommended

Thank you for all the information. I will make some more trotters and try them.
Should I let them run throu the swim or hold them back a little bit like standart trotting?
I think I should react directly on every irregular movement of the trotter as shy bites are not to be expected in stronger currents?

Keep in touch with the shot above the float & nearest the rod - if you can!

You cant really hold them back being fixed bottom only they would just vanish from site.
The idea to slow them down was too have the back shot dragging bottom
