Poor Mr Bream - Fish Lice

I've not had a tench from my local "tench lake" so far this year. Strange when I had so many last year. But this year I cannot seem to get past the bream. I've had loads and loads of them! Not that I dislike catching them. 
Anyway, the one I had last time I visited was covered in what I assume are fish lice.
Do they do the fish any harm, other than looking unsightly?
Should I treat my net / unhooking mat in something (perhaps boiling water?) to stop the spread of these things to other places I fish?
