Bookshops that are worth a visit.

Post by Steve Reed »

In these days of internet auction sites it is a rare pleasure to visit a bookshop that has more than the odd fishing book for sale. I had the good fortune to be passing through Torrington a couple of weeks ago and I spent a very pleasurable half an hour browsing through the excellent selection of angling books and ephemera on sale in River Reads. Are there other good bookshops that we think are worth a visit? My work takes me all over the country and it would be nice to take in specialist bookshops if I am in the vicinity.

I think it is the one run by John & Judith Head. I am in Salisbury next week - if it still open I will drop in. Has anyone been recently?

There is nothing like rummaging around an old second hand book shop, I can get lost in there for ages.

Same here or a charity shop. I've found some really amazing old books in Darlington Oxfam. Mainly on gardening but one or two on fishing.

There used to be a great old bookshop in Hexham but dont know if its still there. I used to visit it regularly in the 80s and found all sorts in that shop..

Glad somebody remembered John and Judith Head; enjoyed going thee many years ago. Nice man. Also in Ely there was i think an antiques place by the river...many different shops under one roof; got some nice country/field sport books there ...but not as much fun as finding bargins in Oxfam shops.

Hay-on-Wye still has a fair number of reasonable secondhand bookshops with angling book sections.
Not as good as it used to be there in the pre-internet shopping times.

I returned to Hay for the first time in about 5 years last October and found it improved on my previous visits. Less shops than before and the field sports book shop had gone but otherwise OK. As said before best to ring John Head to visit. Laura at Chalmers Hallam books is I believe still in business near Ringwood but again by appointment.
