Re: Seating....

Post by Bjp »

this post has just made me realise that i have been carrying a rucksack and a chair with me every time i go fishing and yet i have a shakespeare tackle box with a breakaway seatback / ruck style carrying set up in my loft, what a plum. i always have to take some sort of chair because of back issues but talk about making it hard for yourself.

i'd better go back up there and see what else i have that i have forgotten about.

i know it's not traditional as such but those boxes have been around for some time now

regards

It's a fair point and I do use my local tackle shop, actually both of the ones near me, rather than buying online to do my bit to keep them in business, but with so much of the market now devoted to Carp anglers and most of the rest to match anglers neither of which have a need for a light roving seat, all I can get to sit on from my local tackle shop are heavy over-engineered chairs or match style seat boxes.

Even the light roving seats, such as the excellent JRC x-lite which I have, still weigh more than all of my other tackle put together and are not great on sloping uneven banks.

Ian has a point! With Roger Surgay selling his empire to Sports Direct, who knows what the future holds for tackle shops?

I've got three seats:
An all-singing all-dancing Korum Assessory chair. It's superb, but the legs were a little short and replaced with longer ones from Preston Innovations on day two!

The carry strap is a swine and frequently dropped the chair on my foot. Improved with carabinas, less easily opened by a jolt. The whole chair is a bit heavy to carry for my old back, but I love the way a bait tray clipped on the side, a rod rest back and front and the fuly adjustable legs with mydfeet.

I also use an upturned bait bucket with a padded seat for short whip sessions when I only have a few hours to spare. ( What is it with retirement? I had more time to fish when I was still employed!)

And I recently bought a Shakespeare folding seat, but its horizontal feet braces mean it rocks on all but the most level ground....but it weighs nothing!

I don't know if you remember a tackle shop in Great Wyrley called Anthony Smith fishing Tackle? you may even be in a different part of Staffordshire. This place closed down over 2 decades ago now. I bought my first seat box from Anthony, whilst gazing admiringly at such rods as the 'Tag Barnes Super Pike'. When he closed down I had to find another local tackle shop. So I went to, and still use, Iains in Bloxwich. I have purchased both of my recliner (carp/specimen hunter style) chairs from Iain. Together with an awful lot of other tackle over the years. I will admit to sometimes getting something online but if I want to hold a rod or try out a reel then I always go to my local tackle dealer. They can often price match what you see online and you then don't have to pay P&P plus, if it goes wrong it's far easier to take it back..

no- I am a southerner that only moved north in 89- i tend to use Allens in Walsall on work days who amongst the carp(cod?) stuff has a display of a cane mk4 and 300 at least as a nod to the past

I agree that buying the right stuff is not easy- just think that having one mile of the uk without a tesco would be good!

have not bought from Roger- but my impression is that he is very much a hands on wheeler dealer- moving to control by a large multi chain might be good for the specialist shops- running this type of setup by a big corporate will not be easy and could well drop their current dominance

DOH!!!! Major senior moment there gentlemen  I meant Allens in Bloxwich. Where did I get Iains from? Anyway, these are decent bunch of lads who will generally do their best to get the occasional obscure bit of tackle in. I take it you used to go to Allens when it was over the road on the corner then, Ian? Did you know there is a very good seed shop just up that street opposite where Allens now is? There are of course always Fishermen Of England just round the corner. I don't they are anywhere near as good as Allens. Say hi to Shaun for me next time you are in there :)

Sorry to say I like my comfort so I use a Nash peg one trolley chair. Pricey but worth every penny to me. Load it up push to your swim and your fishing with in a few minutes were if I have carry my to I swim I would be to knackered to set up right away, tickers not what it use to be. I would recommend the to any who needs help with their fishing.
Bernard.
Ps no I am not on commission before you ask, just rate this chair.
